This article comprises two sub–areas: first, the trend in enterprise resource planning (ERP) software development based on the review of literature; and second, it has been observed that, particularly for the small-scale sector, there is a dire necessity for open source ERP systems. The small-scale sector is growing at rapid rate and becoming a vital element in manufacturing as well as economy in any country. This article reviews the research works in published literature on the functional impact of ERP software development for the small-scale businesses from January 2002 to April 2012. A total of 68 articles from 38 journals are reviewed, where this present work exploits particularly the conventional practices in open source software modelling. This work attempts to serve two major goals. First, it will be useful for the researchers interested in determining the research questions in the area of functional impact of ERP software development for small-scale businesses. Second, it serves as a comprehensive reference on the subject till date providing useful information for ERP developers.

Open source approach to software development has been used to develop the so-called ‘horizontal infrastructure’ software such as databases and application servers. However, there is an increasing acceptance of open source approach for developing business applications like enterprise resource planning (ERP) software. Indeed, organizations are building business models around ERP and similar business application developed using open source. In this chapter, the authors analyze the business model of one such open source ERP and explain increasing importance of software licensing and partner networks in FOS-ERP business models.

The adoption Enterprise Resource Planning (ERPs) by small and medium-sized businesses may not possible its cost. At same time, whenever adapt ERP specific needs company, user becomes dependent developers due to the lack access and knowledge respective code. Free and open source software can promote advantages companies, however, for their adoption, it is necessary to develop techniques tools facilitate implementation and maintenance code. This article highlights the importance of defining modeling architectures and reference models for development and maintenance open source ERPs, especially the ERP5 project.

The OSS has been adopted in many developed countries [2], as its introduction and implementation has saved a lot of money and has offered various advantages. We have conducted a survey within some companies in order to show the importance of the use of OSS. Our objective is to present a solution to improve the Moroccan economy by the introduction of Open Source Software and to encourage especially small and medium enterprises to adopt it, and also to benefit from the advantages offered by this technology. Furthermore, we have proposed a new model to decision makers in order to help them choose the best open source software available that exactly meets their needs, which we have nicknamed Easiest Open Source Software Evaluation Model "EOSSEM" [3]. In this paper, we propose a new approach to follow by the decision makers who want to adopt an ERP which is a very difficult task.
